A Tragic Reminder: Road Safety Is Everyone’s Responsibility

The recent fatal road traffic accident in Ogun State, Nigeria, involving British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua, has once again highlighted the urgent need for safer roads and safer behaviours. According to multiple reports, the collision with a stationary truck resulted in the deaths of two of Joshua’s close associates and team members, while Joshua himself sustained injuries and was hospitalized for observation.

This heartbreaking incident underscores a truth we cannot ignore: road crashes are preventable, and every stakeholder: drivers, passengers, pedestrians, institutions, and government has a role to play.

Defensive Driving Saves Lives

Defensive driving is not optional; it is a life‑preserving discipline. It equips drivers with the awareness, judgment, and skills needed to avoid accidents regardless of:

• Road conditions

• Weather

• Vehicle behaviour

• The actions of other road users: drivers, pedestrians

When practiced consistently, defensive driving significantly reduces the likelihood of catastrophic outcomes like the one witnessed this week.

Journey Management Is Essential

Before any trip - short or long - proper journey planning must be carried out using a standard checklist. This includes:

• Route assessment and risk identification

• Vehicle roadworthiness checks

• Driver fitness and alertness

• Weather and traffic review

• Communication and emergency protocols

Effective journey management reduces exposure to hazards long before a vehicle enters the road.

Accountability Begins With Each of Us

While infrastructure, enforcement, and government responsibility are important, personal accountability remains the first line of defence.

Every driver, passenger, and road user must act with vigilance, discipline, and respect for life. Our actions and our inactions can prevent or cause harm.

CeSAHA’s Commitment

At CeSAHA, we remain committed to promoting safe mobility as a foundation for sustainable access to health across Africa. We urge all partners, staff, and communities to prioritize safety at all times.
